The first wedding I photographed in Halifax, Nova Scotia was an absolute dream to document. Here is why.
Julia rented a beautiful airbnb.com rental to get ready at, which suited her classic modern style perfectly. It had the most awesome natural light and made for an incredible alternative to a standard hotel suite. All formal portraits were done before the ceremony. Julia, her wedding party, and her family arrived at the venue by Water Taxi. You heard me.
The outdoor ceremony was nestled in a little green space surrounded by trees and overlooked the water. Their ceremony “alter” were dream catchers. Julie and Matthew greeted each guest with a hug and a glass of wine as they entered the boat house.
The reception was held at Saint Mary’s Boat House and it was the absolutely perfect venue for a summer wedding. Julie and Matthew made time for portraits later in the day when the light was softer and they were more relaxed now that the ceremony was done and the reception was underway! Their “photobooth” was a Paper Moon Portraits set-up! And, the piece to resist: The Mellotones – one of the most amazing bands I have ever heard perform at a wedding. Seriously, I talked about them for weeks afterward.
I had never met Julia and Matthew in person until I showed up to photograph their wedding day. This is not usual for me—I always at least meet for coffee when my clients first book with me or we meet when I photograph their engagement session, but the geographical distances between our home bases and where the wedding was taking place made this not possible. So, I was nervous. I am always nervous meeting new people, even when I am there to do this job I love!! But, within minutes of meeting Julia and then Matthew, my nerves were gone. And by the end of the day, I felt like I had been to one of the best parties of the summer and was among friends.
I had a really hard time narrowing down images to showcase on the blog. Julia and Matthew are stunning people and their joy made my job so effortless. This, coupled with friends and family who were over the moon happy for them to be married after nearly ten years together, made for an emotion-packed wedding to photograph. In a nutshell, there was so much about this wedding that inspired and energized me.
Enjoy.
